Welcome to Grade 11 English Home Language. This course is designed to develop your ability to read, think, write, and speak critically and creatively, while preparing you thoroughly for the IEB English Home Language examinations.

Throughout the year, you will build and refine key Paper 1, Paper 2, and Paper 3 skills, focusing on close reading, interpretation, analysis, and effective communication.

What we will cover:

Literature

  • Novel Study: The White Tiger
    You will explore themes such as power, corruption, morality, social inequality, and ambition, while analysing character development, narrative voice, symbolism, and context.

  • Drama Study: Hamlet by William Shakespeare
    This includes close analysis of character, theme, imagery, language, and dramatic structure, with a strong focus on interpretation and essay writing.

  • Poetry:
    Study of prescribed and unseen poems, developing skills in analysing tone, mood, imagery, diction, structure, and theme.

Comprehension and Language Skills

  • Comprehension: Understanding and analysing written texts, including inferential and evaluative questions.

  • Summary Writing: Selecting and synthesising key ideas accurately and concisely.

  • Visual Literacy: Analysing cartoons, advertisements, and other visual texts, focusing on purpose, audience, message, and technique.

  • Language and Grammar: Sentence structure, punctuation, parts of speech, diction, tone, register, and editing skills.

Writing Skills

  • Creative Writing: Narrative, descriptive, reflective, argumentative, discursive, expository and blended writing.

  • Transactional Writing: Speeches, letters, articles, blogs, and other functional texts, tailored to audience, purpose, and context.

Speaking, Listening, and Presenting

  • Prepared and unprepared speeches, oral interpretations, and discussions that develop confidence, clarity, and critical engagement.

By the end of the year, you should be able to:

  • Read and respond to texts with insight and originality

  • Write clearly, coherently, and purposefully for different contexts

  • Analyse language and literature using appropriate terminology

  • Apply exam skills confidently in preparation for the Grade 11 IEB assessments and beyond

This course will challenge you to think deeply, question ideas, and express yourself with precision and confidence.
